Tree-sitter descends from post at farm

first_imgFamous tree-sitter Julia “Butterfly” Hill came down to earth Saturday at an urban garden that is under threat of development. The garden, farmed by about 350 families, has been around for several decades but the landowner, Ralph Horowitz, wants to replace it with a warehouse. An offer to sell most of the land to a nonprofit trust for $16.3 million failed last month when donations fell short. That prompted protesters to set up a tent city and use the walnut tree as a watchtower in case Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies tried to evict them. The garden has drawn visits from celebrities such as actress Daryl Hannah, Martin Sheen and folk singer Joan Baez.last_img read more

LYIT GETS TOP MARKS IN NATIONAL ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY

first_imgA recently published report has found that Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) has the highest economic impact of all third level colleges in Ireland. The LYIT campusEssentially, every euro invested in LYIT creates an economic boost worth more than four euro. This means investment in LYIT has a greater economic impact nationally than a similar investment at any of the country’s Universities or at any of the other Institutes of Technology. The TIONCHAR PROJECT examines the gross economic output of each euro spent on higher education. LYIT has the highest of all the multipliers (4.25) calculated for the country’s seven Universities and fourteen Institutes of Technology. LYIT President Paul Hannigan said the Institute is a significant contributor to economic development in the region.“We have seen significant cuts in third-level education funding in recent years. Despite this, we have increased student numbers and delivered new courses to meet changing needs of the marketplace. This has been accomplished with the commitment of staff to provide quality education, however, it is not sustainable long term. With new international links established in the US and China, we want to further develop student mobility both outward and inward.”“The report shows that investment at LYIT has the greatest knock-on effect, which has repercussions for future budgets since the reverse is also true, a reduction in state funding for LYIT will have a much higher negative economic impact on the region and nationally. I hope these findings will be taken into account in the allocation of future budgets for third-level education.”One of the authors of the report, Brian Lucey, Professor of Finance at Trinity College Dublin, said, “Irish Higher Education delivers a significant ‘bang for the buck’. Letterkenny shows that this is delivered by all sorts of institutions – IoTs and universities, urban and regional, all play a part in this. Letterkenny IT is delivering quality education and a high economic impact and should be recognised and rewarded for doing so.”  LYIT GETS TOP MARKS IN NATIONAL ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY was last modified: October 25th, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

South El Monte gets new city manager

first_imgSOUTH EL MONTE – Assistant City Manager Anthony Ybarra has been named interim city manager for South El Monte, officials said Wednesday. The former city manager, Gary Chicots, was fired from his position Friday during a special meeting. “This is a challenge,” Ybarra, 57, said. “I look forward to working with the council and staff to continue having the city of South El Monte progressing forward in redevelopment, housing and other issues.” The City Council approved Ybarra’s new post in a 4-0 vote Tuesday. Councilman Allen Co was absent from the closed-session meeting. “Tony has the ability and the knowledge and, of course, the experience,” Mayor Blanca Figueroa said. “And he knows about all the projects of running City Hall, so I have all my faith and trust in someone like (him) that essentially has what it takes to help us move the city forward.” Ybarra, who’s worked with South El Monte for nearly two years, will take over a large number of projects. He will oversee a mixed-use development, nursery project, senior housing plan and the recently approved Mayans development – among other plans – that have been designated for South El Monte. He will additionally oversee about 50 of the city’s employees and will receive a salary of between between $96,000 and $109,000, according to Figueroa. Ybarra said it is too early to say if this post will become permanent. araceli.esparza@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2303 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREBlues bury Kings early with four first-period goals 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Ex-Gemstar CEO has plea deal nixed

first_imgThe sentencing of Gemstar-TV Guide’s former chief executive, accused in a $248 million fraud case, was delayed Monday after a Los Angeles judge said he would reject the penalty sought in a plea deal because it was too lenient. Henry C. Yuen previously agreed to plead guilty to one felony charge of obstruction of justice under a deal reached with the government in September. The agreement called for him to receive three years of probation and six months of home detention. He would also have to pay a $250,000 fine, donate $1 million to charities and be restricted from serving as an officer or director of a publicly traded company during the probation period. U.S. District Judge John F. Walter, however, said he had tentatively decided to reject the sentence. “This sentence sends the wrong message to corporate America,” Walter said. “I just think this sentence is wholly inappropriate.” The judge continued the matter until Jan. 23 after Yuen’s attorney, Stanley S. Arkin, said he wanted to make additional presentations in hopes of swaying the court and needed time so he and his client could mull the plea agreement. Under the deal, Yuen can withdraw his plea if the court decides it is not bound by the recommended penalties in handing down a sentence. “It’s been a long, exhausting case,” Arkin said after the hearing. “I think (Yuen) has had much more bad luck than ever he dreamed.” Monday’s hearing came two years after the Securities and Exchange Commission filed fraud charges against Yuen and ex-financial chief Elsie Leung, saying they overstated company revenue by $248 million between March 2000 and September 2002 to boost the company’s stock. Prosecutors say Yuen, subpoenaed to testify before the SEC in March 2003, installed a program called “Eraser 2003” on his Gemstar computer that made it difficult to recover or trace deleted files. Soon after, he had the hard drive of his Gemstar computer removed from his office. The SEC’s civil case against Yuen and Leung – both of whom were forced out of their posts in October 2002 – is pending. In the criminal case, defense attorneys urged the judge not to consider allegations in the SEC trial. They maintained that there was a public perception that the sentence fits the crime to which Yuen pleaded. “I couldn’t disagree more,” retorted Walter, saying any “inconvenience” Yuen would experience from the proposed sentence “paled in comparison” with the wrongdoing. The sentence also could set a damaging precedent, under which corporate criminals wouldn’t hesitate to purge information that might lead to tougher criminal counts, Walter argued. “It’s a no-brainer,” the judge said. “You destroy the evidence to avoid more serious charges.” After leaving his post as chief executive, Yuen worked in another position with Gemstar. He was fired in April 2003 but continues to receive a salary of $150,000 plus benefits from the company. Yuen is challenging his termination and will have to repay the money should he lose. The U.S. attorney’s office declined to comment on the hearing. Gemstar, meanwhile, reiterated its stance that “the crime to which Mr. Yuen has pleaded guilty deserves a severe punishment.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
