Social And Selling Without Shame

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now There are some people who believe that selling has no place on social media. They believe that to sell would be unholy, profane, impure. They believe that social is for connecting with other people, for communicating, and for sharing the richness of our lives. But there is no more shame in selling over the social channels as there is selling anywhere else.Throughout all of human history, wherever people have come together to meet, they have shared the value they create. From the first marketplaces, to the first bazaars, to the first shopping malls, and the first strip malls, we have traded, bought, and sold the things we want and need in the places we come together. What social has done has expanded the marketplace to cover the entire wired world. And those wires will soon extend to the few remaining parts of the Earth still unwired. In fact, the marketplace won’t even require wires—we are already connecting to all the world has to offer on a device that fits in our pocket. Or on our wrists. Or in our glasses.Social connects us with the people who can create value for us (and for whom we can create value) regardless of where they live and regardless of distance. It’s the great leveler. The size of your company no longer matters. Your marketing budget doesn’t matter that much either. We can find the people who need to buy what we sell—and the people who sell what we need.If it is okay for you to buy over the Internet without any bad feelings or misgivings, then it’s okay for you to sell over the Internet, too.The social tools are merely amplifiers. If you are a smarmy, self-oriented, dirtbag who only cares about himself, you are those things in real life as well as on the social channels. If you are a thoughtful, caring, trust-worthy value creator in real life, you’re that on the social channels, too. Here are some thoughts I published today over at Owner Magazine.last_img read more

AugerAliassime ousts top seed Tsitsipas at Queens

first_imgLondon: Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime laid down a marker for Wimbledon as he claimed the scalp of Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at Queen’s on Friday with an impressive 7-5, 6-2 victory. At 18, Auger-Aliassime becomes the youngest Queen’s semi-finalist since Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt at the same age in 1999. The Canadian may have been seeded lower, but he owns a perfect record against Tsitsipas with three victories as a junior and now two on the ATP Tour. Also Read – Djokovic heaps praise on ‘very complete’ MedvedevTsitsipas — two years older than his opponent — ruefully admitted he is going to have to find a magic formula to beat Auger-Aliassime. “He’s the most difficult opponent I’ve ever faced, and I think it’s gonna take a couple of tries to beat him,” said Tsitsipas. “It’s upsetting obviously that he’s better than me. “I have to accept that he’s better than me. “I might never beat him, but if I think that way, just need to wait, years maybe, for that chance to come.” Also Read – Mary Kom enters quarterfinals, Saweety Boora bows out of World C’shipsTsitsipas, who joked he might donate $10,000 to charity when he does beat the Canadian, was not helped by a painful right shoulder which required on-court treatment — compounded by two falls in the final game of the first set. He said he woke up feeling sore and blamed it on having to play two matches yesterday — an unfinished first-round clash with Kyle Edmund and then a tough three setter with journeyman Frenchman Jeremy Chardy — although it was the same for Auger-Aliassime. “Playing two matches wasn’t easy,” he said. “Playing a three-set match was really difficult, not just for my nerves but also for my body. So that was it.” Auger-Aliassime will play either his more experienced compatriot Milos Raonic or 37-year-old veteran Feliciano Lopez in Saturday’s semi-finals. – ‘Few expectations’ – He laughed when asked if had been thinking about Boris Becker who won Queen’s at 17 in 1985 and then won Wimbledon a few weeks later. “Not really,” the eighth seed said. “Honestly I had few expectations coming here but I have handled my nerves and I don’t want to think too far ahead.” Auger-Aliassime and Tsitsipas contested a hard-fought first set before the young Canadian took it 7-5, breaking the Greek’s serve in a game that saw the top seed hit the grass twice. Auger-Aliassime raced into a 3-0 lead in the second with his opponent unusually listless and struggling at the changeover as he received treatment from a medic. Earlier, Daniil Medvedev became the first Russian to reach the last four at Queen’s in the Open era — where he will play Frenchman Gilles Simon — as he outplayed Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, the fourth seed running out a 6-2, 6-2 winner. Schwartzman’s hopes of repeating his impressive win over defending champion Marin Cilic in the second round were quickly doused by Medvedev, who broke in the first game of the match and then in the fifth and then did the same again in the second.last_img read more

Cabinet eases norms for FDI in retail allows 26 in digital media

first_imgNew Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday liberalised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rules in four sectors, including single-brand retail trade and digital media, to boost investment in the private sector.Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said the Union Cabinet, at its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has decided to allow 100 percent FDI under the automatic route for coal mining and contract manufacturing, eased sourcing norms for single-brand retailers and approved 26 per cent overseas investment in digital media as it looked to boost economic growth from a five-year low. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c detailsAn official statement said the decision has been taken to in order to provide clarity on contract manufacturing in the country. “Subject to the provisions of the FDI policy, foreign investment in ‘manufacturing’ sector is under automatic route. Manufacturing activities may be conducted either by the investee entity or through contract manufacturing in India under a legally tenable contract, whether on ‘Principal to Principal’ or ‘Principal to Agent’ basis,” the Commerce minister’s statement said. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from ThursdayThe Narendra Modi Cabinet also eased the 30 per cent local sourcing norm in Single-Brand Retail (SBRT) where domestic procurement for exported goods will now qualify for inclusion under the 30 per cent sourcing rules. “With a view to provide greater flexibility and ease of operations to SBRT entities, it has been decided that all procurements made from India by the SBRT entity for that single brand shall be counted towards local sourcing, irrespective of whether the goods procured are sold in India or exported,” Goyal said after the meeting. “Further, the current cap of considering exports for 5 years only is proposed to be removed, to give an impetus to exports,” he added. The extant FDI policy provides that 30 per cent of the value of goods have to be procured from India if the SBRT entity has more than 51 per cent FDI. Besides, the local sourcing requirement can be met as an average during the first five years, and, thereafter, annually. In a significant boost for the fast-growing digital media space, the Cabinet approved 26 per cent FDI in digital media with government approval. Currently, 49 per cent FDI is provided under the approval route in news channels and the government has now decided to expand the span of FDI to the digital media space. “The extant FDI policy provides for 49 per cent FDI under approval route in up-linking of ‘News & Current Affairs’ TV channels. It has been decided to permit 26 per cent FDI under government route for uploading or streaming of news and current affairs through digital media, on the lines of print media,” an official statement said.last_img read more

Rules protecting Hawaiian spinner dolphins expected soon

KEAUHOU, Hawaii — Federal officials are in the final review stages for rules that would ban swimming with Hawaiian spinner dolphins.West Hawaii Today reported Wednesday that National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials are nearing completion of regulations proposed almost three years ago that would create a 50-yard (46-meter) barrier around the mammals.Officials say the rules would outlaw coming within the protected area around Hawaiian spinner dolphins — or “naia” in the Hawaiian language — by any means including swimming or using a boat to intercept the animal’s path. The prohibition would cover all persons, vessels and objects and extend two nautical miles (4 kilometres) from island coastlines, including waters bounded by Maui, Lanai and Kahoolawe. The regulations would include exceptions such as dolphins approaching swimmers and boats and safe navigation.___Information from: West Hawaii Today, http://www.westhawaiitoday.comThe Associated Press read more

Dunne will play some part in Georgia game Trapattoni

first_imgGIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS confirmed that Richard Dunne will feature in Ireland’s friendly with Georgia today, suggesting the defender is likely to get “30-45 minutes” of game time this evening.Dunne has failed to play a competitive game of football since Euro 2012, after suffering from persistent hip and groin injuries, and was last month let go by Aston Villa seemingly on account of these problems. However, despite his lack of first-team action in recent times, Trapattoni is confident Dunne is in a fit enough condition to represent Ireland at the Aviva Stadium today.Nevertheless, the veteran coach said Dunne wouldn’t be considered for Friday’s World Cup qualifier with the Faroe Islands, and added: “After this game, we can evaluate [Dunne’s] physical condition.”Meanwhile, Shane Long said he was looking forward to the prospect of having the defender back in the side, and suggested he has shown few ill effects in training despite being sidelined for so long.“He’s still a rock at the back and knows the game inside out,” the West Brom striker said. “He loves playing for his country, so I’m sure you’ll see the Richard Dunne of old tomorrow.”Normally I’m quiet on the pitch, but tomorrow will be different – Long>Hoolahan and Delaney included in new-look Ireland side to face Georgia>last_img read more

Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg joins Google

first_imgAlthough Google+ is still invite-only, its number of users is climbing. Of course, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are on the social networking, but there’s also another tech heavyweight using the new Google feature: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This may come as a surprise since Google is claiming Google+ will be a contender to Facebook, but as the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.Zuckerberg is most likely checking out the inner workings of the new venture, sussing out what the competition has to offer. Though Google+ is still “rolling out” and adding new members, it’s still somewhat exclusive. Google sent around invites to many members of the tech industry media on Tuesday and then briefly opened up invites for a few hours last night. Those who were already on Google+ could invite friends. However, that didn’t last long before Google+ was over capacity again and not offering any more invites. We don’t know who invited Zuckerberg to the Google+ party, but people who are currently on Google+ can search and find him. I took a quick look and found his profile, which was very bare (although so is mine). Zuckerberg doesn’t look very happy in his profile pic, either. Could it be that someone’s grumpy about a potential threat to Facebook? All Zuck’s profile says as of now under the “About” tab is “I make things.”There’s always a possibility that this is someone pretending to be Zuckerberg, but it looks pretty convincing. Plus, Zuck has 13 friends in his circles, many of which are Facebook employees, including Facebook’s CTO Bret Taylor, software engineers Zach Rait and Arjun Banker, director of product Blake Ross, product designer Francis Luu, and product manager Justin Shaffer. Will Zuckerberg actually use Google+ as it’s intended, or he just getting an inside peak at the competition?via VentureBeatlast_img read more

iMpulse is the worlds smallest Bluetooth gaming controller

first_imgMany people, and many Kickstarter users, have come up with alternatives to touch screen gaming on mobile devices. Everyone knows that fingers ultimately get in the way to anyone who’s serious about gaming on their phone or tablet. Now Black Powder Media have launched a Kickstarter for their Bluetooth gaming controller for smart devices. Their product is different than what you might expect though — it’s the smallest wireless controller for smart phones in the world. And it doesn’t just act as a controller, either. The iMpulse game controller is so small it fits in the palm of your hand and is ideal for attaching to your key chain… because it’s also a key finder. Yes, using your smart phone in combination with the iMpulse, you can track down lost keys with ease, which is a pretty handy extra feature. That’s not all though, you can also take remote pictures with the iMpulse, using it as a controller for your smartphone’s camera, so no more dodgy mirror pictures when you need to take a self portrait. If you’d like a remote control for watching films on your tablet or phone you can use iMpulse to adjust volume, fast forward, rewind and play without interrupting what you’re watching. It works with both iOS and Android devices and there’s already hundreds of games that are compatible with iMpulse, with many more are on the way. From emulator-based titles to popular touch games such as Temple Run, you can play them all using a controller instead of getting those pesky fingers in the way.iMupluse is doing well on Kickstarter and it’s easy to see why — not only is it a clever device, it has loads of extra features and uses, plus it’s cheap. It is very similar to ThinkGeek’s 8-bitty controller, but there is room for some competition in the huge mobile phone accessory market.Black Powder Media would like $1 shy of $50,000 to fund their project and so far they already have over $40,000 of that target. With 39 days still to go, they’ll have no trouble reaching it. At only $30 for an iMpulse it’s an absolute bargain.Get one at Kickstarterlast_img read more

Parents can leave tuition money in GET for now; new 529 college savings plan delayed

first_imgA state committee that manages a prepaid tuition savings plan for college-bound students said it expects to give its customers a new investment option by this summer — but in the meantime, account-holders have until at least Sept. 1 to pull out their money without incurring state penalties. Some members of the committee that oversees the state’s Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) plan had hoped to set up a 529 college savings plan by the end of this year. Now, it’s more likely the savings plan will be in place by the summer. Because it’s taking longer than expected, the deadline to pull out of the program also has been extended — it’s either Sept. 1, or 60 days after the 529 savings plan opens, whichever is later.Washington is one of the few states in the country to offer a prepaid tuition plan, which allows parents to buy tuition “units” in advance. One hundred units are guaranteed to cover the cost of tuition and fees at the state’s most expensive public school, and the program is based on the idea that tuition would always go up in price. But in 2015, the state Legislature voted to lower tuition for two consecutive academic years. This year, a year of undergraduate, in-state tuition and fees at the University of Washington’s Seattle campus — typically one of the state’s most expensive public schools — is $10,503, down from $12,168 in 2014-15.The GET committee responded by freezing the payout value of a GET unit to $117, then giving a refund to those who paid $163 or more per unit — the cost of GET units at their peak.last_img read more

Sen Brown Rep Gibbs Cite ASA in Release Calling for Farm Bill

first_imgSenator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Congressman Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) issued a statement last week calling for cooperation during the farm bill conference committee that began this week.“It seems to be a rarity these days when two members of Congress from different political parties are able to come together on an important issue such as the Farm Bill, but we have found common ground. We believe the farm bill conference must produce a bill that provides common sense, market-based resources that ensure economic stability for farmers and savings for taxpayers.”In the statement, both Sen. Brown and Rep. Gibbs outlined their priorities for the conference, and cited the concerns raised by ASA and other farm groups about the potential for distortions in the House-advocated Price Loss Coverage (PLC) Program in Title I of the bill:“The PLC program, created by the House bill, would undermine provisions of the Senate-passed bill that tie farm payments to planted acres, instead of the historic base acre calculation. PLC could create inverse incentives for farmers to plant for the program instead of listening to the market. This proposal would drive farmers to overplant the crop that would give the highest guaranteed price. We want a Farm Bill that will provide farmers with the risk management tools they need without distorting market forces,” Brown and Gibbs said. For a full copy of the release, please click here.last_img read more

Your perfumes may pollute the environment

first_imgLove to wear designer perfumes? Be careful, as certain molecules produced in these man-made fragrances act as potential contaminants of the environment, and may also impact our ecosystem in the long run, said a study conducted in the canals of Venice, also known as the city without sewers.Investigating the canals of Venice, the researchers looked for traces of molecules referred to as “perfumes” in the ingredients of products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos and many other personal hygiene products that we use daily.
